Al-Muntada Hall at the Yasser Arafat Museum hosted on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the 38th anniversary of the assassination of Khalil al-Wazir “Abu Jihad,” along with a seminar titled “Solidarity with the Palestinian People: From the Early Beginnings to the War of Genocide.” The event was organized by the Khalil al-Wazir Foundation and attended by members of the PLO Executive Committee, Fatah Central Committee, diplomats, ministers, ambassadors, civil society representatives, writers, and journalists.
The ceremony opened with the Palestinian national anthem, followed by a moment of silence and recitation of Al-Fatiha for the souls of Yasser Arafat, Abu Jihad, and all Palestinian martyrs.
Dr. Ahmad Soboh, Chairman of the Yasser Arafat Foundation, welcomed the attendees and described Abu Jihad as a founding leader who embodied discipline, sacrifice, and commitment. He highlighted his leadership style, noting that he worked quietly and effectively without seeking attention, yet left a profound impact on the Palestinian national movement. Soboh also quoted poet Mahmoud Darwish in tribute, emphasizing Abu Jihad’s deep influence on the revolution and his presence across all fronts of struggle.
He added that Abu Jihad’s influence transcended formal titles, describing him as a central figure in the revolution whose legacy continues to inspire.
Dr. Hanan Al-Wazir, Chair of the Khalil al-Wazir Foundation, also addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of preserving Abu Jihad’s legacy through documentation, research, and educational initiatives. She highlighted his role in combining strategic thinking with organizational leadership and in building global networks of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, particularly during his time in Algeria in the early 1960s.
She noted that Abu Jihad played a key role in strengthening international support for the Palestinian struggle by establishing connections with liberation movements and activists worldwide. She called for deeper study of his experience to inform present and future efforts.
The event concluded with additional remarks from Dr. Ahmad Azam, Ambassador Salman Al-Herfi, and Ambassador Husam Zomlot.
